A pharmacist trained in French universities, Ferhat Abbas began as a believer in equal rights within the colonial system. After years of broken promises, he turned to full independence, joined the FLN, and became a respected political face of the revolution abroad.

Why they matter

He served as the first president of the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic (GPRA), giving the revolution an international political voice.
