Last great king of an independent Numidia, Juba I sided with Pompey against Caesar in Rome's civil war. After defeat at Thapsus, he chose death rather than capture, closing a chapter of North African royalty.

Why they matter

His defeat marked the end of Numidian sovereignty and the absorption of much of Algeria into Rome's African province.

His son, Juba II, would later be raised in Rome and become a famous scholar-king of Mauretania.
