Beylerbey of Algiers in the 1550s, Salah Rais combined naval campaigns at sea with overland expeditions deep into the Sahara. He took Bejaia from the Spanish, intervened in Morocco and pushed Algerian power as far as Touat and the Tuareg routes.

Why they matter

He extended the Regency of Algiers's reach from the Mediterranean coast deep into the Sahara.
