Zighoud Youcef

Successor to Didouche Mourad in the North Constantine zone, Zighoud Youcef organized the August 20, 1955 offensive that brought thousands of civilians and fighters into open confrontation with the colonial system.

His August 20 offensive shifted the revolution from limited guerrilla warfare to a mass national struggle.

August 20 is also the date of the Soummam Congress one year later — both now national days.
