In 1980, a writer named Mouloud Mammeri wanted to give a talk about old Kabyle poetry in a big Algerian city. The talk was cancelled. Many students, especially in Kabylie, felt this was unfair. They walked into the streets, peacefully, to say: β€œOur language matters. Our culture matters.”

In the early 1990s, Algeria went through a very hard time. Elections were stopped, and a long conflict began between the state and some armed groups. Many families lived with fear. Yet through all of this, teachers, doctors, artists and neighbours kept protecting one another and holding on to hope.
