Geography & meaning

A massif of high, dry mountains in eastern Algeria — pine forests, ochre canyons and villages that hide in stone.

Cultural meaning

Home of the Chaoui people, who preserve a distinct Amazigh language, a tradition of horse and rifle, and a deep sense of place.

Historical significance

These mountains hid Queen Dihya in the 7th century and lit the first fires of the 1 November 1954 revolution thirteen centuries later.
